History Activities

Learning Objective -
To select, organise and communicate historical information in a variety of ways

The children were set the task to investigate homes in the Tudor Period. They were given the opportunity to look at all aspects of Homes and through discussions in their groups they set a research task. Then over a series of lessons the children used the library, books within the class and the internet to research their chosen topics. At the end of the week they will have to present their findings to the class, explaining what they have found out. Here are some photographs of the children researching and beginnig to put their presentatiosn tiogether. Two groups decided to create a Powerpoint presentation and two groups will create an A3 information sheet.

I will record their presentations on Friday afternoon if we are back in time from Treforest, and post them on here over the weekend.

UniGlam Sports Trip

The children have just returned to school after a fantastic morning spent at the University of Glamorgan's Sports Hall, where Year 2 Sports Development students taught the class different sports skills.

The children enjoyed their trip on the train and behaved fantastically and the tutor of the course said they were the best school that has visited them - which is something we could have told him!

The children really enjoyed themselves here are a few of their comments!

Anna Grant said " It was a really fun morning "

Callum Wilson said "It was a great experience"

Abigail Maggs said "It was really fun , I hope we can go again !"

Sports Trip on Friday

On Friday, we will be travelling to the University of Glamorgan in Treforest to take part in a morning of sports activities. For us to be sure that we can arrive promptly by 10:00am the children will need to arrive in school 8:20am. We will then leave school at 8:30am to catch the train at 8:53am in Ton Pentre.

The children will need to bring -

  • tracksuit

  • trainers

  • wear their Gelli Polo Shirts

  • a Packed Lunch

  • A bottle of Water to take with us

The children will also need to bring in £2 to cover the cost of the train fare.

If you have any difficulties in getting your child to school by 8:20am please contact me tomorrow ( Thursday 21st January ) so I can try and resolve your difficulties.

I will post photographs and hopefully ( camera permitting) a video of the activies on this blog later this week.

Pupil Emails

On Wednesday I will be sending consent forms home to parents asking for their permission to set up school based email addresses for year 5. This will develop their ICT skills and will also allow me to email homework to them and for them to email it back - which is an advanced IT skill. We will be trialling this in Year 5 this year with the possibility of rolling it out to upper juniors next year.

We will be setting up emails with EPALS - a company which spelialises in emails for under 13 yr olds. Please find a link below to their website so you can see their policies and what they are about.

Hopefully this will be extremely beneficial to the pupils learning.

BBC Science Link

To reinforce the learning the children did in school today - the children can now play this game via the BBC website. Please click on the link below

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/science/materials/

Then click on Solids, Liquids and Gases

Enjoy!

Mr J.

Where does it belong?

Today, the children received an email off 'NASA' asking them to help investigate materials. The children were given a list of different materials and had to organise them into groups depending on their properties. Please find below photographs of the children organising. Learning Objective - to communicate clearly through discussion using relevant scientific vocabulary

Learning Objective - to communicate clearly through discussion using relevant scientific vocabulary

The children were given a range of materials on slips of paper and had to work as a group to classify them by their propoerties. They then had to justify this to the class. The children created some interesting group titles; Food, Liquids, Helpful things, Powders, soft, hard and after a long discussion one group thought of gas.
A very pleasing activity with the children working together well to jusity their reasons.

I will also place links to useful websites where learning based games can be found.

As you can see there has been a heavy snowfall, please take care if you are out playing!

I will also put updates of further work on here if school does close tomorrow. Please keep checking the school website/facebook pages.

Snow!

Today after a week of snow the pupils in Class 7 investigated pentominoes!
Look at the different 5 squared shapes they created!

Hopefully this awful weather will pass and we can all get back to normal!

There will be activities posted on the school wikispace - www.gellipri.wikispaces.com

Follow the links to the Class 7 page and there will be a link for activities to complete during the snow - if it prevents us from getting into school. There will be multiplcation work on the 4 time table and comprehension style activities.

If you are having difficulties accessing this wikispaces please contact me on christopher.jones.gellipri@rctednet.net and I will email the work directly to you.

Please remember to be careful, while the snow is fun it can be dangerous!

Thanks for your continued support in these difficult times.
